Declan Weeks Relishing Wrexham Double-Header

Declan Weeks says Southport will go into their festive double-header against Wrexham full of confidence after continuing their improved form last weekend.

Weeks has been instrumental in the Sandgrounders’ turnaround in fortunes and was one of four goalscorers as Steve Burr’s team saw off promotion-chasing Eastleigh in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

The 21-year-old midfielder found the target with a delightful strike, capping a man-of-the-match performance and underlining his current rich vein of form.

Southport travel to Wrexham on Boxing Day before the return fixture at the Merseyrail Community Stadium on New Year’s Day and Weeks, who was born and grew in in North Wales, is looking for another positive return.

“It was about time I hit the target to be fair,” said Weeks. “It doesn’t happen very often when I get the ball on target and it goes in. Hopefully I can get a few more goals and it would be nice to get some more like that one.

“I decided to take a touch, their man went past me and as I hit it I felt that I had caught it sweetly.

“It’s nice to get a goal but it’s not something I base my game on. My game is more about helping the ball get through midfield, linking up the play and getting a few assists.

“Eastleigh have got some money behind them and the confidence from a win like that does us the world of good going into the Christmas period. Getting the three points were important in terms of moving up the table.”

Weeks, a former Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy Player of the Year, arrived at the Merseyrail Community Stadium in September.

The central midfielder has established himself as a firm favourite with supporters and is relishing the matches against Wrexham, his home-town club.

“We’ve got a big couple of games against Wrexham and there’s no reason why we can’t target six points.

“The mood in the dressing room has been positive since I came here and we’ve got a good group of lads.

“When you look at the Eastleigh match you could say that we don’t make it easy for ourselves. I felt we did well when we were a man down but it became a bit scrappy after they had a man sent off which seemed to suit them a bit more.

“We should have seen the match out a bit better after we went 4-2 ahead but we were pleased to get three points and we’ll look forward to the matches against Wrexham.”
