4 out of 5 resurfacing in Sefton has failed – that’s official

30th January 2017

Bootle’s John Fairclough, the Labour councillor responsible for highways across Sefton Borough, has admitted that 80% of last year’s road resurfacing surface dressing programme had failed to a greater or lesser extent.  A shocking 36% failed totally.

At last Thursday’s Council meeting at Bootle Town Hall, Ainsdale Lib Dem councillor Haydn Preece asked a formal written question about what he claimed were serious failures, following numerous complaints from residents.

Responding to Cllr Preece, Sefton Cabinet member Cllr Fairclough said that “a total of 25 sites were surface dressed in the 2016 programme.  Of those sites 9 have been identified as failing throughout the scheme.”  He went on to admit that there were “a further 11 sites where there have been failures currently only in isolated areas.”

Cllr Preece says that he is appalled: “To have over a third of resurfacings fail completely, and with four out of five unacceptable to some extent, is simply not good enough.”

“I and my colleague Cllr Lynne Thompson have been inundated with complaints from Ainsdale residents concerning the dreadful road dressing works that have taken place.  I know that councillors representing other parts of the town have been contacted likewise.”

“Why couldn’t the Cabinet Member responsible have made an early statement?  Remedial action should have been activated as soon as we received public complaints. Instead residents have had to endure simply awful road surfaces with distinct dangers across Southport.”
