World Autism Awareness week starts today

26th March 2018

As World Autism Awareness Week begins today, over 500 people are starting their walk for autism for Autism Initiatives, a national charity which began with a school in Southport.

530 people have signed up to walk 10,000 steps a day for eight days, pledging to raise over £16,000 together for autism.

Autism Initiatives, which began when Mum Pat Minshull raised funds for Peterhouse School in Southport and now has services across the UK, is delighted with the response. Chief Executive Andrew Grainger, who is also one of the walkers, said, ‘We’re so grateful people are walking for autism. This is our first year but it will be an annual event after this fantastic response.’

It’s thought that over 1 in 100 people have some form of autism, which is a neurological condition and can mean a difference in the way a person thinks, perceives and therefore understands the world and others. This may result in difficulties or differences in communication, social interaction, thinking and in sensitivity of the senses.
