Meols Cop closed after women killed by bus

UPDATE – Merseyside Police can confirm that Meols Cop Road and Butts Lane in Southport have now been reopened.

Officers would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation whilst the roads were closed to facilitate the investigation.

Merseyside Police can confirm that Meols Cop Road remains closed between the Kew Roundabout and Butts Lane whilst officers carry out enquiries into the collision.

The Kew Roundabout itself has now been re-opened allowing access to Town Lane and the nearby retail park.

Officers are asking people to continue to avoid Meols Cop Road for the time being.  They are also thanking people for their patience and help during this morning’s rush hour.

Merseyside Police can confirm officers are investigating following a fatal road traffic collision in Southport last night, Sunday, 17 May.

Emergency services were called to Butts Lane, at around 11.50pm, to reports a female pedestrian had died following a collision with a bus.

Officers are working to identify the woman and inform her next of kin.

Specialist collision investigators remain at the scene to establish the full circumstances of the incident and a number of road closures are still in place in the Kew area while enquiries are carried out. As such motorists are advised to avoid the area surrounding Butts Lane for the time being.

A 56-year-old man from Burscough has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
