Southport Air Show has been shortlisted for Tourism Event of the Year in the 2015 Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards.
The awards, held each year to recognise all that is great in the region’s tourism sector, will see Southport Air Show compete with other events, such as Giant Spectacular and Liverpool Biennial for the coveted award.
The Air Show which has been one of the highlights of Southport’s event calendar since 1991 and 2014 saw one of the best flying programmes in the event’s history.
The highlight of the show was the flypast of the only two airworthy Lancaster Bombers in the world, one British and one Canadian. The event also featured The Red Arrows, the Typhoon (Eurofighter), Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and on the Sunday a display by the last Vulcan bomber.
Cllr. Ian Maher, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Tourism, said: “The Air Show is a fantastic family event which draws a large crowd from within the borough and beyond.
“Last year’s show was bigger and better than ever before and it was great to see Southport beach so busy on both days of the event.
“The team behind Southport Air Show work really hard to bring the event together and it is fantastic to see it shortlisted for this award.”
As well as the flying programme, the event features a large ‘Air Show Village’ which includes entertainment, military vehicles, an aviation marquee, armed forces ground displays and a host of other attractions for all ages.
The show attracted around 100,000 visitors in 2014, with the town’s hotels and restaurants being fully booked for the event.
Mark Catherall, Sefton Council’s Head of Tourism, said ‘The Air Show is one of the best family events in the northwest, with something for everyone to enjoy.
