Why Your Car’s Thermostat Is More Important Than You Think

I’ve worked on cars for quite some time and one of those things that you don’t pay much attention to until it really starts to give you a problem is the thermostat. While most motorists don’t think about it, a bad one can result in engine overheating, reduced gasoline economy or serious engine trouble. If your temperature gauge seems to have been malfunctioning, it’s important to inspect this small but crucial part immediately.

What Does the Thermostat Actually Do?

It’s pretty straightforward. The thermostat is basically a valve that decides when coolant should flow through the radiator. Cold engine? It stays closed so the engine warms up nice and quick. Once it hits the right temperature, it opens up and lets the coolant do its cooling job.

When it works right, everything runs smooth. But if it sticks closed, your engine gets way too hot, especially in traffic. If it stays open, the engine never warms up properly, you burn more gas, the car feels flat, and your heater barely warms up in winter. I’ve seen both problems plenty of times.

Indications It’s time for a replacement.

No special equipment is required to look for signs of trouble. Look out for these frequent hints:

    • The temperature needle ticking or swinging but not holding steady.
    • Engine taking way too long to warm up
    • Sudden idling or driving at low speeds and hot up times.
    • Car does not get hot enough even after running
    • Coolant leaks in the area around the thermostat housing

One of my friends ignored the indications until his car overheated on the highway. It ended up being a lot more than just a thermostat replacement. It is better to catch it early on, to save yourself a huge headache.

Choosing the Correct One for Your Vehicle

Thermometers can differ from each other. You must have the proper temperature rating and size for the engine you need. Original parts are commonly used and are usually more expensive as they fit perfectly. Good aftermarket choices are also available, however, it’s necessary to remain with a respectable supplier and avoid the lowest priced junk.

Always choose a kit with a new gasket. Almost always, the old one will leak at a later date if reused. A few minutes to make the right specs makes a tremendous difference in the new’s lifespan.

    Replacing the Thermostat

If you are familiar with basic tools, this will be a repair that you can do on your own. Drain some of the coolant, remove the housing around the upper radiator hose, clean the surface, reinstall the new thermostat with the new gasket and refill the system. Remember to drain out the air after to prevent temperature problems.

If you are not confident enough to do it on your own, any decent mechanic can accomplish it in no time at all and at a low cost. Once completed, monitor the gauge during the first couple of drives to ensure there are no leakages or other issues.

Why It Matters in the Long Run

A new thermostat can mean your engine runs at the proper temperature, better gas mileage, better power and avoid costly damage. One of the easiest and most economical maintenance tasks to perform.

If you are feeling the signs and symptoms, begin searching for a great thermostat for sale at your local auto parts store or online. Make the time to match it exactly to your vehicle in order to only have to do it once.

While not as showy as a flashy engine, a working thermostat helps ensure that your car is happily running, mile after mile, without any attention. If it is yours, it is in trouble; get it sorted out soon. The difference will be apparent right away, and you’ll save yourself from larger issues.
