Back in 2016, researchers at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Clinical Sciences, led by Marc Vendrell and working with collaborators in Barcelona and Manchester, developed fluorescent peptide technology capable of helping analyse disease progression at an early stage.
The work was significant enough that Edinburgh Research and Innovation, the university’s commercialisation arm, licensed it directly to pharmaceutical company Merck.
Work like this, a technical breakthrough, rarely makes local headlines, yet it sits at the centre of a field now drawing national and even global attention.
Peptide research has moved well beyond university labs and into the UK’s wider public consciousness, more recently over the past two years.
Search interest in peptides has climbed sharply, driven partly by the GLP-1 and weight-loss medication boom, and partly by a broader cultural shift towards biohacking, longevity, and personalised wellness.
Scotland’s own life sciences sector has grown alongside this, now standing at roughly 750 companies and 46,000 employees nationally, with Edinburgh’s BioQuarter recognised as one of the UK’s most concentrated life sciences clusters.

Scotland alone hosts a substantial share of this activity, with Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute previously receiving significant UK government bioscience funding, and a steady pipeline of university spinouts attracting investment from biotech-focused funds active across the country.
At the same time, public interest in peptides more broadly has occasionally blurred the line between legitimate research use and informal self-administration, prompting closer regulatory attention on products sold for research purposes. That’s a separate part from the laboratory-facing research supply chain Edinburgh’s institutions rely on.
For a city with a genuinely strong life sciences research base, the wider UK conversation about peptides is really two overlapping stories. One is a steady, decades-long thread of serious scientific work, of the kind Edinburgh’s own researchers have quietly contributed to for years.
The other is a newer, faster-moving public fascination, shaped by social media, wellness culture, anecdotal evidence and a genuine medical breakthrough in weight-loss treatment, that has pulled the word “peptide” into everyday conversation for the first time.
This discussion has become increasingly important as both continue to grow, particularly for anyone within the research community whose work depends on credibility in a field now attracting far more public attention than it once did.
