Sefton residents will be able to recycle a wider range of household items from April under changes to the borough’s kerbside collection service.
Biscuit tins, aerosol cans, aluminium foil, plastic food pots, tubs, trays and Tetra Pak cartons will all be accepted in brown recycling bins for the first time.
Collection days and frequency will not change. Brown bins will continue to be collected fortnightly.
The expansion is required under the government’s Simpler Recycling regulations, introduced through the Environment Act 2021, which aim to standardise the materials collected across England. The national target is a 65% municipal recycling rate by 2035.
Items that cannot be recycled through the kerbside service include crisp packets, plastic bags and drinking glasses.
Once collected, mixed recycling is sorted at the Gillmoss Materials Recovery Facility before being sent to specialist plants for reprocessing.
Peter Harvey, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, said: “We know how important recycling is to our residents, and the inclusion of these new materials will make it easier than ever for people across Sefton to do their bit for the environment.
“Small changes at home can make a big difference, together we can reduce waste, conserve resources and help create a greener future for our borough.”
The changes form part of the council’s “Cleaner, Greener, Together” campaign.
Lesley Worswick, Chief Executive of the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, said: “These changes are a fantastic step forward, making it simpler for residents to recycle more and waste less directly from home.”
