Merseyside’s Police Commissioner has praised a ‘week of action’ aimed at making South Liverpool a cleaner and safer place.
A number of organisations came together to take part in the initiative between 2–9 November 2015.
South Liverpool Homes (SLH), Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council’s Localities and Healthy Homes Teams, Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT) and Merseyside Fire Service and others teamed up to take part in the action-packed week, which concentrated in the Speke and Garston areas of Liverpool.
These organisations are all members of South Liverpool’s Joint Agency Group (SJAG) who address issues in South Liverpool through a collaborative approach.
Residents took advantage of free skips to dispose of their rubbish before bonfire night, visits from Merseyside Fire Service who offered safety checks to vulnerable tenants and a wide range of enforcement activity from Merseyside Police to target areas of concern. Dog owners also had the opportunity to get their pets micro chipped and health checked free of charge through the charities PDSA and the Dogs Trust, with LHT offering debt advice at one of the events in Garston.
All the organisations involved got together on Wednesday 4 November to take part in SLH’s walkabout where all staff leave the office on the first Wednesday of every month to seek out any issues in the community. This tied in with SLH’s Winter Warmer giveaway were over 200 packs where given out to vulnerable tenants to help them stay warm and well this winter.
Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy joined in the walkabout to visit tenants and learn more about their concerns, she said: “I was delighted to be able to show my support for this week of action across Speke and Garston.
“We know that the most successful way to tackle anti-social behaviour and make our neighbourhoods better places to live is to encourage all the agencies who can improve community safety to work together.
“This initiative was a great example of how, when all the partners unite, we can make a real difference, addressing local issues to improve people’s quality of life. I congratulate everyone involved.”
Sam Pope, Neighbourhood Housing Manager at LHT said “Our message is clear – we want residents to feel safe in their home and community and to instil confidence that we are all doing everything in our power to ensure this happens. We hope that this targeted action will result in longer term improvements to Speke and Garston and make the area a safer, more pleasant and enjoyable place to live.”
Liverpool City Councillor Steve Munby, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: “This action week brought together organisations and residents to make their neighbourhoods, cleaner, brighter and safer.
“It’s great to see organisations working in partnership to deliver actions which will improve residents’ quality of life.”
A total of 72 tonnes of rubbish was collected during the week through the provision of 9 free skips and 4 caged vehicles across Speke and Garston; rubbish that may have been used for fly tipping or used to burn on unsafe bonfires. A further 3 tonnes of rubbish was removed after bonfire night. The City Council’s Pest Control Team also carried out a programme of sewer baiting to combat vermin problems in the area.
