At least two cars have crashed into each other in Hillside this evening causing massive tailbacks.
Traffic heading towards Birkdale via Waterloo Road has ground to a halt after an incident involving multiple cars.
The crash happened near to the Southport Rugby Club ground just after 4pm.
Huge tailbacks are now bringing cars to a standstill with Waterloo Road bridge in gridlock and cars forced to do dangerous u-turns.
The accident is also having a knock on effect on Liverpool Road traffic with motorists trying to use the adjoining streets as a rat run to escape the gridlock.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area completely while the incident is cleared away.
