A safety campaigner who wants to make a Southport railway crossing safer has created a film showing how dangerous it is.

The Crescent/Grosvenor Road level crossing only has two barriers and has been the site of a number of fatalities and near misses over the years.

Now safety campaigner Stuart Allister has created ‘A Matter Of Time’ a short four minute movie showing a series of horrific near misses and potential fatal accidents at the busy crossing in Birkdale.

Councillor Tony Dawson added:

“The Youtube video recently posted on the internet by a concerned resident shows how easy it is for a pedestrian to stroll onto the railway line in front of an oncoming train.
“I am asking Merseytravel and Network Rail to look at this video as well as the statistics” say Councillor Dawson.
“These half-barrier crossings exist all over the country. But i nan urban environment, where there are many elderly residents in particular, the risk of an accident is greater, as this video clearly shows.”

The video shows an elderly man missing being hit by a train by a matter of seconds after he walked across the crossing thinking it was safe to do so.

The footage has now been shared thousands of times and has been sent to Network Rail to highlight the dangerous nature of the crossing.
They have yet to respond.
