Upskirting’ ban must go ahead, say Lib Dems

Southport’s Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, John Wright, has said that the proposed change to the law to ban the practice of ‘upskirting’ must go ahead, after a bill to outlaw it was blocked in the House of Commons by Conservative MP Christopher Chope.

The bill, brought forward by the Lib Dem MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, has all-party support.

John Wright said: “I have written to Wera urging her not to give up the fight. It was an appalling and disgraceful act by Christopher Chope to block this measure. ‘Upskirting’ is a disgusting practice, and is just one of many ways in which women, and in particular young women, are harassed every day in the streets, on public transport, and in our pubs and clubs. We need laws which offer better protection to them. As a father to three girls, I feel particularly strongly about this”.

Mr Wright has welcomed the news that the government now intends to sponsor the bill and bring it back to the Commons for approval.”That’s good news”, he said. “ I hope the government ensures that there will be no further delays or parliamentary games, and that this new law will be introduced as soon as possible to provide the women of our country with better protection against predatory men”.
