Merseyside Fire and Rescue had to cut a woman free from one of the vehicles. Two fire engines and the fire search and rescue team remain at the scene.

The bypass is partially blocked, and police have warned those travelling towards Southport to expect long delays, with traffic backed up to Cross Barn Lane, Ince Blundell.
