Traffic chaos hits Lord Street after traffic light failure

Traffic chaos hit Lord Street, Southport, this afternoon as the Nevill Street junction lights failed.

Engineers rushed to the scene in a bid to fix the old and worn traffic lights system but their quick actions were still not enough to stop traffic backing up towards the promenade.

One of the contractors on scene warned that despite a quick fix, the lights system is now so old and worn that it will need totally replacing sooner rather than later in order to avoid a full chaotic meltdown.

The junction is one of the busiest in the town since the redevelopment and pedestrianisation of Chapel Street.

A combination of sunshine, warm weather and a weekend should be the perfect mix for a happy weekend.

But the long-awaited warm weather spelt disaster for the many families hoping to capitalise by hitting Ainsdale Beach for a break.

There were traffic jams stretching from Ormskirk into Southport and the same from Crosby into Southport.
