Southport golfing sensation Tommy Fleetwood is a shining example of the Sefton Sports Awards.

The Awards, which take place on Wednesday (July 12) at Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, celebrate sporting success and achievement from teams and individuals across the whole of the borough.

They are organised by Active Sefton, which is part of Sefton Council’s Health and Wellbeing portfolio.

In 2008, a young Tommy Fleetwood won the Young Male Sports Personality of the Year Award at the Sefton Sports Awards for his golfing achievements.

Since then Tommy has excelled in the sport and is now ranked as the 15th best golfer in the world and a hot favourite for the Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale later this month.

Ahead of this year’s Sefton Sports Awards, Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Tommy Fleetwood’s talents were recognised in Sefton back in 2008 and since then he has become a household name on the global golfing circuit.

“His success so far is a perfect example to sports people in any field on what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

“Who knows at this year’s Sefton Sports Awards we may have another superstar right in our midst?

“Hopefully Tommy will have another successful time at this years Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale and we wish him all the best for now and the future.”
