The Akinson, Southport Proudly present
LAUGH OUT LOUD COMEDY CLUB
Saturday 6 December 2014 8.00pm, Starring: Tom Wrigglesworth, Barry Dodds, Howard Read And Damion Larkin (MC)
Tom Wrigglesworth is one of the smartest and funniest stand ups you could hope to spend an evening with. He’s an award winning act including a nomination for the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals Comedy Award (formerly The Perrier Award). This led to his own Radio 4 series, Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Letters, followed by a sold out UK tour with extra dates added due to overwhelming public demand.
With a disarmingly charming delivery and unforgettable appearance, this likeable and funny man became a national have-a-go-hero when he rescued a little old lady from the jaws of a Virgin train ticket inspector by organising whip round from other passengers; only to be arrested for begging. His subsequent story of the event secured Tom several awards including the Chortle Best Show Award, and a nomination for the main Edinburgh Comedy Award.
This led to a sell out tour of the UK, and runs at the New Zealand Comedy Festival and prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival.
Following this, Tom recorded two series of ‘Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Letters’ for BBC Radio 4, tackling consumer issues in his own hilarious way and winning a highly acclaimed Sony Award for best Radio Comedy along the way.
His next radio project, ‘Tom Wrigglesworth’s Hang Ups’ for BBC Radio 4 is currently in its second series and focuses on telephone conversations with his parents.
As a natural and engaging television presenter, Tom put his technical background to use when he appeared on ‘Electric Dreams’ for BBC 2, advising a modern family as they fast forwarded through three decades of technology. He then presented Engineering Giants, also for BBC 2, which saw Tom climbing aboard an oil platform, servicing a passenger ferry and dismantling a jumbo-jet whilst interviewing various engineers to keep the viewers informed as the three major strip downs unfolded.
Charismatic wordsmith Tom is an articulate and natural raconteur who possesses an innate ability to riff with an audience like they’re old friends. A rare chance to see him outside of his national tour.
‘The ultimate crowd pleaser’ The Guardian
Howard Read is opening the show for us but is an accomplished headliner in his own right and is the only British comedian on the circuit who’s appeared on both The Royal Variety Performance and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC). In 2002, he was also the only British Nominee for the prestigious Perrier Award, and has since written for Ross Noble and Ricky Gervais.
He is also the creator and performer in Big Howard, Little Howard (BBC1), the world’s first human cartoon double act but he’s also an acclaimed stand-up comic. This is a rare club performance due to filming commitments and is set to be a real treat.
“Breathtakingly funny” Sunday Times
More mirth arrives in the form of Barry Dodds, a circuit favourite and lovable Geordie whose cheeky grin hides no end of uproarious and unpredictable stories and gags. He charms audiences nationwide and is as adorable as he is funny – this brilliant comic will equally captivate you and make you laugh. In 2006 he headed to Luxembourg where he became the first comedian to appear on Luxembourg TV. He’s also appeared in the sitcom Hebburn (BBC2) with Vic Reeves.
“Razor sharp humour” Metro
Your MC for all the above is Southport born Damion Larkin, one of Britain’s most promising comedy talents, renowned for being a spontaneous and lovable host.
