David H Myers Opticians on Preston New Road was targeted by a gang of males on bikes.

Merseyside Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in Southport in the early hours of Monday, 29 June.

At around 0.15am, officers were called to David H Myers opticians, Preston New Road following a report that two offenders, wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered, had gained entry to the premises while the business was closed. Another two offenders waited outside on two motorbikes.

Once inside, the offenders stole a quantity of designer spectacles before making off on the motorbikes on Cambridge Road in the direction of High Park and Meols Cop.

Officers attended the scene and a search of the area was carried out. Crime scene investigators have forensically examined the building and CCTV from the business and surrounding area is being located.

A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.

Neighbourhood Inspector Graham Fisher said: “This is a small, independent local business and the owner is understandably devastated that he has been targeted.

“It’s shameful that some people think it’s acceptable to destroy other people’s hard work and enterprise for their own gain and we are determined to bring those responsible before the courts.

“I would appeal to people who may have seen anything suspicious around the Preston New Road and Meols Cop areas of Southport overnight to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“I’d also urge anyone who thinks they may have been offered the spectacles for sale to contact us.”

Anyone with information can call Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

This is not the first time shops in area have been target, back in January Churchtown Dry Cleaning Centre was targeted in a similar incident.
