The wreck of the Chrysopolis off Southport (1983)

It was 1983 when Peter Kenrick took these shots of the wreck of the Chrysopolis off Southport.

Much has changed since then, although you can just see the Southport Gasometer standing proud above the town in the background of the second picture.

What little that is left of the Chrysopolis can still be seen from Southport seafront at low tide, but she is a deceptively long way out, and lies on the other side of the Bog Hole channel, meaning a walk out should not be undertaken as the channel fills very quickly once the tide turns.
The Chrysopolis ran aground on February 21st, 1918 on her way into Liverpool from Italy. She was carrying copper ore.

A two masted steamer, not much is known about the circumstances of her demise as strict restrictions on reporting were still in place at the end of World War I when she ran aground.

She was used for target practice by the RAF during World War II.
