The Fernley is an event that aims to commemorate one of the largest RNLI lifeboat disasters that saw the loss of 27 life boat men.

14 out of the 27 men were from Southport, with the other 13 being from St. Anne’s, Lytham. The Fernley also intends to recognise John Fernley; the Eliza Fernley, named after his wife, was the Southport stricken lifeboat that was tragically lost.

So, as a celebration of sheer bravery, participants will gather around the Southport Promenade at 11:00hrs on New Years Day to either watch or take part in a 1.5 mile course around King’s Gardens and the Southport Pier. A symbolic plunge will then be made into the Marine Lake water for a ‘bracing’ 100m swim to the finish where the old fisherman’s bell must be rung.
