The best Premier League wingers of all time

28th October 2023

The Premier League (PL) has been graced with so many incredible footballers over the years, particularly since the modern era began in 1992. In this article, we’ll be discussing some of the greatest wingers the competition has ever seen.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Now playing out his days in the Saudi League, and still dominating, Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the greatest winger to ever make their name in the PL.

As a young Portuguese from the island of Madeira, he made his way from Sporting CP to Manchester United in 2003. Six years at the club saw him play over 200 PL games, scoring 92 goals for the Red Devils.

His athletic prowess, technical ability and attacking instincts caught the eye of Real Madrid where he would go on to win the Ballon d’Or an incredible 5 times. He’s arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Mohammed Salah

The Egyptian King, as he was proudly named by Liverpool fans. Mo Salah has been the spearhead of the team’s attack for many years since joining from AS Roma in 2017.

During this time, Salah has become an undeniable club legend and helped the Reds win almost every competition there is to win – the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup included.

With his deadly left foot, dazzling speed and goal-scoring knack, he’s been invaluable to Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp.

Gareth Bale

A notable graduate of Southampton’s quality academy, Gareth Bale started life in professional football as a left-back. After moving to Tottenham, he played further up the pitch and enjoyed magnificent success on the left wing, scoring some of the greatest PL goals of all time.

Bale scored 26 goals, many with his superb left foot, in the 2012/13 season for Spurs, earning him a world record transfer fee and move to Real Madrid. A stalwart of the Welsh international team, he’s helped his country to compete against some of the biggest nations in the world.

Although he had a brief but intense period at the peak of his PL career, he surely has to go down as one of the best wingers to emerge from the competition.

Ryan Giggs

One of the great icons of PL football. Ryan Giggs spent almost all his entire footballing life at Man United, with an illustrious senior career spanning nearly 25 years. During that period, he racked up 963 appearances for the club and won a total of 34 trophies, including Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues and FA Cups.

Fantastic on the ball, gifted with pace and untouchable in close quarters, Giggs had everything demanded of a PL winger. Later in his career he moved more centrally and dominated the midfield just as much. He was an important part of the success United had under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
