The amount of jobless people has risen in Sefton with a total of 4,825 people claiming either Job Seekers Allowance or Universal Credit.

There are currently 220 more people claiming than this time last year.

In the 18-24 age bracket unemployment has increased by around 2%, with 30 more claims than January 2015.

However hopes are high for 2016, with a large manufacturer hopefully setting up in Merseyside in the near future .

Alan Harrison of Jobcentre Plus, said: “Unemployment has increased, but only marginally and we’re around where we expect to be for January.

“In Merseyside as a whole we are seeing a decrease in unemployment and we think 2016 will be a great year for jobs in the area.

“We’re seeing a lot more vacancies open up and two thirds of these are full time, career based opportunities, which is good.

“I can’t name names yet, but we have been approached by a large manufacturer who is hoping to come to Merseyside, which we think will be amazing for the area, and bring lots of jobs.

“We hope the good news will continue, with lots of vacancies available in the call centre and logistics sector.”
