Catherine and Sarah Tapper raise £1020.10 by hosting a Stella & Dot Party with Debra Lee to raise funds and awareness for Sarcoma UK.
We had never heard of Sarcoma before our Mum was diagnosed with it in May 2012. Mum went in for what we thought was a routine operation to remove a lump that had grown to the size of a tennis ball from her elbow. The lump was first noticed when it was the size of a pea but rapidly grew. Mum had just retired from a successful career in nursing. We knew something did not seem quite right by the rate in which the lump was growing but we were assured many times by several medical professionals that it was nothing to worry about and that it was just a cyst. When mum was called in two weeks later for the results, the surgeon had to reveal the shocking news that is was a very rare form of cancer called Sarcoma.
Sarcomas are cancers that develop in the supporting or connective tissues of the body such as muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, blood vessels and fat. It is a rare and devastating form of cancer that affects 3800 people each year including children and teenagers.
Everything moved very quickly from then on. She was referred to the Sarcoma team at The Royal in Liverpool where she was looked after by a fantastic specialist team. After more extensive tests it was confirmed that it was in fact Leiomyosarcoma at stage 3. The Sarcoma team were an unbelievable supportive to us all and helped us to remain positive. They advised us to stay away from researching on the internet. Mum had to have another operation where they removed more tissue and part of her tricep muscle to ensure a full cell clearance. This was also followed with a thirty session course of Radiotherapy treatment at the Marina Dalglish Centre based at Aintree Hospital.
In August 2012 Mum was given the all clear although she is still not out of the woods, she has to have regular scans every three months for the next five years but for the last two years thankfully they have remained clear.
It is important to us to raise awareness of this type of cancer and to help those that have been diagnosed with Sarcoma. As a thank you, we want to give back to Sarcoma UK by shouting about the great work that they do and help fundraise towards research.
Tapper’s of Union Street Southport host a successful night of jewellery and wine to raise money for Sarcoma
Sisters Catherine & Sarah Tapper of Tapper’s Cafe, Southport are thrilled with the success of their jewellery party which was held on Wednesday 29th October. We were overwhelmed with the response and the turnout. We couldn’t have done it without Debra Lee from Stella & Dot Jewellery. Catherine believes that the increasing popularity of the Stella and Dot brand was a key to the success of the night. Stella & Dot house one of a kind collections that are designed by celebrated New York designers and featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Grazia and Elle as well as on the wrists and necklines of today’s hottest celebrities such as Jennifer Anniston and Katy Perry.
We have had a great response from local businesses and would like to thank those who very generously donated prizes to the event. A special thanks to everyone who attended and donated. It is very much appreciated and the £1020.10 raised will go far to help Sarcoma UK.
