16th February 2021

Police have swooped to detain a suspected shoplifter in dramatic fashion in Southport town centre today.

The suspect reportedly spat and swore at officers as at least six police tackled the male to the ground.

The arrest followed reports he had taken a number of items from the B&M bargains store on Lord Street.

The suspect was so agitated officers had to restrain him in a special restrictive jacket, while onlookers described hearing shouting and banging once he was detained in a police van.

Eyewitnesses reported the suspect had attempted to offer stolen goods to nearby shops.

The suspect was taken away for questioning and remains in police custody
