Study Finds Consumers Want to Buy Apparel Ethically & Responsibly

3rd February 2022

Buyers want to choose and care for apparel in a more ethical and responsible manner, according to a new study by Ginetex. Environmental information on textiles’ care labels—preferably highlighting ecological care recommendations—an environmental eco-score, and a focus on the proportion of recycled fabrics, are some of the measures about 65% of those surveyed requested. Mens Streetwear Jeans are the right choice for you if you wish to be comfortable while wearing jeans. There is sufficient room available when wearing them to provide comfort and ease while walking and moving.

Consumers increasingly aware of their textile purchase eco footprint

Ginetex, the international association for textile care labelling, said in its third European barometer for 2021, that consumers in seven European countries— France, U.K., Germany, Italy, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Spain —are increasingly aware of their purchase’s ecological footprint when they buy textile items.

Wunderlabel is one company rising to the challenge, supplying high grade yarns that are woven into custom iron on clothes labels by professional weaving machines with the newest technology.

The labels are finely woven and produced under strict quality control, resulting in a durable and resilient product with vivid colours. Skilled personnel and safe working conditions make this a fairly produced article with certification guaranteeing that the labels are free from harmful substances and suitable even for babies.

While clothes buyers widely recognise the usefulness of the textile care label, understanding of the care symbols remains mixed. About 98% of respondents to the Ginetex study identify the ironing symbol perfectly. The same goes for the washing symbol, well recognised by 90%. However, only 27% of people surveyed know the symbol for bleaching, 25% for drying, and barely 16% for professional cleaning.

“My Care Label” app explains care symbols

To help educate the population, Ginetex has developed the “My Care Label” which explains the care symbols and provides tips and advice on cleaning and caring for textiles while also caring for the planet. It is important to make sure you have a good dry cleaning service on hand.

While 71% of Europeans on average said that they follow the care instructions, the figure varies considerably from one country to another. And a surprisingly high 68% of those surveyed said that they cut off their clothing labels, the study found.

34% said that they follow the instructions to keep their clothes in good shape in order to be able to wear them longer, while 32% follow instructions to avoid any problems when they wash their clothes. The study was conducted by the IPSOS institute for Ginetex on a sample of 1,000 people aged 18 to 65 in each of the seven countries.
