Storm Arwen wreaks havoc across Southport

26th November 2021

High winds caused by storm Arwen have ripped off panels from the roof of a town centre car park.

Emergency services have closed off Tulketh Street in Southport this afternoon after panels from the roof of the NCP car park above top clothing store Flannels became loose.

The heavy panel, throughout to about 10ft long, detached in high winds caused by Storm Arwen which has been battering the town all day long.

Met Office scientists say there is an amber warning in place with winds of 60 to 75mph expected to continue hitting Southport into the weekend.

It’s unknown how long the road will remain closed off for while emergency crews work to secure the dislodged piece.

Elsewhere trees have fallen on Liverpool Road in Birkdale narrowly missing striking cars as they drove by.

One woman said she was left terrified and shaken after missing being struck by a falling tree by just a few seconds
