Starving sandgrounders in food parcel plea

Struggling and desperate families in Southport are dependent each week on food parcels, according to Southport Soup Kitchen.

Maria Tummons, director and trustee of Southport Soup Kitchen, a charity based on London Street, revealed that their wide-ranging work includes discreetly dropping off food parcels to families-in-need across the town, who may be on the edge for a range of reasons including a low income or problems with housing or Universal Credit.

The charity points out that it helps all members of society, not just the homeless and rough sleepers and also gets discreet referrals from churches, health visitors and other local organisations.

They are not just families where the parents are out of work – some of the families that we help have one parent who is working, or people on very low salaries and short contracts.
