Friends of Fernley Observatory met with John Pugh and Cllrs. Keith and McGuire to plan for the future of Southport’s forgotten asset.
The magnificent telescope in the Observatory hidden in Hesketh Park is pointed at the stars but sadly the rotating roof will not open properly. This is as result of a botched restoration frustrating the intentions of the Edwardian pioneers who donated the Observatory to the town to encourage interest in astronomy.
For years though until recently the building lay locked up until the Friends of Hesketh Park obtained funding for its restoration.
“Its absolutely fascinating. ” said John Pugh ” a triumph of engineering that still works but funding is needed to sort out the copper roof that has also been subject to vandalism.
“We are all hoping to take the project forward as it has such potential particularly for educating budding star gazers. Most of Southport though does not know it’s here but I am sure this dedicated team will change that.”
