Southport YMCA can’t gym and bear it as site shuts down

Southport YMCA bosses have been forced to close down their Hoghton Street, Southport building for good – saying that competition has driven them out of town.

The nursery will remain open. Staff have been told they are now out of jobs and customers only have until the end of the month to claim back any refunds.

A statement on the Sefton YMCA website reads:

It is with great sadness that we are announcing the closure of our community health and wellbeing centre with immediate effect.

Unfortunately as providers in the local fitness and leisure industry have grown around us, with cutting edge facilities and cheaper prices – a considerable amount of our business has been lost and we can no longer afford to compete.

We haven’t taken this decision lightly and have worked tirelessly over the last couple of years to improve our offer to you but we now realise it is no longer viable to run our health and wellbeing centre.

As trustees of YMCA Sefton it is our duty to do the right thing to protect the charity s long term interests for the benefit our children and young people in the borough.

As a result we have made the very difficult decision that we can no longer afford to subside the running of our community health and wellbeing services.

All health and wellbeing pass holders are entitled to pro-rata refunds on their subscription and we will write to them directly. We will not be able to issue any refunds after January 31.

Our nursery is still very much open and continues to offer excellent early years service provisions.

We’d like to thank al of our loyal customers from our health and wellbeing centre for their support.

YMCA Sefton remains committed to providing services for children and young people in the borough in accordance with the YMCA Federation Plan.
