As part of the upcoming Southport Arts Festival and following on from their generous fundraising for Queenscourt, the Southport Writers’ Circle are looking to entice people along to an Open Mike Evening on the 21st August.

All are invited to come along for an evening of reading shorter than short fictions, tantalizing, pithy poetry, curious musing monologues, or anything else that they would like to share with a group of like minded creatives. Or of course people are encouraged to simply bring themselves and enjoy the entertainment!

The Writers’ are always looking to help fledgling wordsmiths or to give more experienced writers a forum to test out their work. Current Chairman Sean Heslin says “We have been going for thirty something years and one of our core aims has always been to bring out the best writing even from those who didn’t even know they had the spark in them. This event gives a great opportunity for anybody to come and have a bash, or even to pick up something new.”

The Writers were in peril earlier in the year, with the closure of Birkdale library, which had been their meeting place for many years. It, and many other libraries in the region were subject to budget cuts which meant that many valuable community resources were lost. Happily the well regarded Parenting 2000 centre took in the group, allowing them to continue their own brand of scribbling and critique which they hope to keep going for years to come.

The event is taking place on the 21st August at Parenting 2000 on Mornington Road at 8pm sharp. If planning to attend, please be aware that there is limited space, so latecomers may be turned away. There is no age limit, but some publicly produced material may require children’s ears to be rapidly covered. More details at
