Training company goes on national stage

A training company with offices in Southport has made it through to the finals of the National Family Business of the Year Awards.

PHX Training was named winner of the professional and business services category at the inaugural Cumbria Family Business Awards. Now the team is looking forward to the national finals and gala reception to be held at the Mayfair Hotel in London on June 8.

The Family Business of the Year Awards are organised by Family Business United, the resource centre that champions and celebrates the family business sector.  Now in their fifth year, the awards recognise the diversity, strength and depth of family firms across the UK and seek to highlight the contribution that family firms make to the UK economy.

Dan Scott, managing director of PHX Training, said: “We’re thrilled to have made it through to this stage and it makes us proud to be representing Cumbria where a large number of businesses are family-based.

“Our focus has always been to demonstrate that anything is possible for our learners so it’s great to be recognised for our work at this level.”

Paul Andrews, managing director of Family Business United, said, “We are delighted to be able to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do.”

PHX Training was set up in 2004 by Dan and Jayne Scott to help people to improve skills, qualifications and job prospects. It works with a range of learners from apprentices to those trying to advance their skills including upskilling and those who are out of work.

Starting as a small operation in Barrow with only one member of staff, PHX Training now has seven centres across the North West and employs 55 people.

PHX Training, which has seven centres across Lancashire, Cumbria and Merseyside, offers courses in English and maths leading up to a level 2 qualification, the equivalent to a grade C at GCSE.

Other training programmes available through the network include business administration, customer service, IT, management, team leading, warehousing, hospitality, health and social care, cleaning services and sales and recruitment.
