SOUTHPORT Step up to the challenge

Step up to the challenge

A national charity which has its head office in Merseyside is urging locals to sign up today to walk for autism – 10,000 steps a day for eight days, ending on World Autism Awareness Day.

Walk for Autism 2018 is being organised by Autism Initiatives Group, which is based in Bootle and has a school and social enterprises in Southport, along with resource centres, residential and supported living services throughout Merseyside. The hope is that £20,000 will be raised to help people with autism and their families.

It’s thought that over 1 in 100 people have some form of autism, which is a neurological condition and can mean a difference in the way a person thinks, perceives and therefore understands the world and others. This may result in difficulties or differences in communication, social interaction, thinking and in sensitivity of the senses.

But helping people with autism can make a difference. Mark, who works in a Southport café run by Autism Initiatives, said, “I was bullied because I was different and wouldn’t fit in. But when I came here everything changed. I met new people who helped me with new tasks and I gained confidence. I’m happy now. It has changed my life.“

Andrew Grainger, Chief Executive of Autism Initiatives Group, said, “We probably all know someone with autism so we hope lots of people will get involved. It’s going to be a fun and enjoyable way of raising money.”

Those who want to step up to the challenge will be joining others across the country, walking 10,000 steps a day for eight days to raise money that will help positively change lives for the better.
