Southport Sailing Club held their annual Lifeboat Pursuit Race on Sunday 6th September 2015, raising money for the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust.
The pursuit which saw 24 sailors on the marine lake racing raised £161.00 towards the new lifeboat house for Southport.
Southport Lifeboat crew member Scott Harrison said; “The money raised will be put towards a new lifeboat station for the town.
“We are grateful to the race organisers at Southport Sailing Club, and to everyone who took part and helped raise money for the lifeboat.”
Run by the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust (SORT), Southport Lifeboat provides a lifeboat and land based search and rescue service around the Sefton coastline.
Independent of the RNLI, the Trust relies on donations and fundraising to support itself to provide a life saving service in an area of coast and water covering between the River Mersey and the River Ribble, and up to 25 miles offshore, including Southport Marine Lake.
The Southport Lifeboat crew are all unpaid volunteers who are on call all year round. When the pagers go off, the crew drop what they are doing to provide help for those in need.
Keith Porter, Senior Coxswain of the Lifeboat said; “We were recently granted planning permission to build a new lifeboat house, something we have been aiming to do now for nearly 20 years.
“There is still a lot to do behind the scenes before work can begin, but we than everyone who has supported us and helped us get this far.”
The Southport Lifeboat and Quad bikes were recently used to help look for a missing male at Formby Point.
