Officers from British Transport Police’s Southport Neighborhood Policing team have been monitoring motorists at level crossings during the last few months to ensure they are aware of the dangers and risks involved.

During this period a marked mobile safety vehicle has been positioned at a number of level crossings in the Southport area to reduce incidents and educate motorists and pedestrians.

As a result of similar initiatives in October, November and December 65 motorists were detected misusing level crossings, many of these will be referred for a driver improvement course.

The van we use has nine cameras fitted with automatic number plate recognition technology so motorists who break the law can be contacted at a later date.

The aim of the operation is to make motorists and pedestrians more aware of level crossings and to educate them in using them correctly.

Sergeant Steve Lawman said: “This gives us another opportunity to drive home the message that it is not worth running the risk at level crossings. Taking the risk could leave you seriously hurt or cost your life.”
