Plaza Park & Ride Push

Liberal Democrat in Southport are pushing for the town’s Park and Ride service to be extended to cover Ocean Plaza as well as the town centre. John Pugh MP is backing moves by Councillors Sue McGuire and Tony Dawson to get the contract changed to include this option. There are already bus stops and laybys in the centre of Ocean Plaza.  – it just needs the buses.

Councillor Sue McGuire says:
“I am delighted that my request for the new Park & Ride bus contract to include a diversion to Ocean Plaza was supported by all the Southport councillors at this weeks’ meeting of Southport Area Committee.”
“At the moment, it is impossible to get to Ocean Plaza by bus.  I have raised this issue a number of times in the past but it has not been possible to redirect the Park & Ride service here because of contract limitation. With the contract up for renewal, however, it makes perfect sense for any new contract to include the option of an Ocean Plaza stop over. ”

Councillor Dawson agrees:

“We have a range of shops, restaurant and entertainment at Ocean Plaza  which is only accessible at the moment by private car or a long walk, sometimes in the rain, down the pier.  It is vital that Ocean Plaza and the Beach are linked more easily with the Town Centre. We should be doing everything we can to make it as easy as possible for visitors to the Southport to move between the two.”

Although the final decision on the Park & Ride route is not due to be made for some time, Councillor McGuire has persuaded the Southport Area Committee to write to the Cabinet Member for Highways to express support for this diversion.
