Southport Mosque rioter jailed for 28 months

By On The Spot News10th October 2024

A man from Southport has been jailed for two years and four months for his role in the violent disorder outside of Southport Mosque in July.

Martin Taylor, 39, of Montgomery Avenue, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and possession of a controlled Class B drug and was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, Wednesday 9 October.

CCTV footage shows Taylor at the forefront of the disorder in Southport on Tuesday 30 July and was identified throwing numerous missiles at officers and a brick at a police carrier.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Roberts said: “The despicable actions of those involved that day left more than 50 officers injured and Taylor was heavily involved in the disorder.

“Like many others, Taylor tried to hide his identity by concealing his face, but thanks to officers who trawled many hours of CCTV and social media footage, his efforts were in vain.

“Taylor will now spend a significant amount of time in prison and I hope he spends that time reflecting on his actions that day.

“We continue to identify more people who attended the disorder in Merseyside and we will not stop until we’ve put everyone we possibly can before the courts.”
