Stephen Callaghan, aged 64, of York Road, Birkdale, Southport, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday charged with downloading indecent images of children.
He pleaded guilty to 12 offences of making indecent images and eight of possessing them.
These involved photographs, movies and animated cartoons in all five categories of seriousness. He was sentenced to a 3 year community order, and must attend Northumbria Sex Offenders programme and is banned from working with children.
The judge also ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years and made an order, lasting seven years, restricting his internet use.
He was also told to pay £750 in court costs
