Southport Kings Gardens Update 19th March 2013
Contractors have started to dismantle the first of nine victorian shelters as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) through their Parks for People programme.
All nine shelters are to be dismantled and restord to their former glory. The shelter restoration programme will take twelve monts to complete.
It is one of the largest current park restoration projects in the UK and is entirely externally funded.
Wigan-based ironwork restorers ‘Lost Art,’ will return the shelters to their original splendour during the months ahead.
Work to improve the area around the bowling green has also begun where all pathways are being resurfaced and drainage improved. Access via the steps on the Esplanade is currently cordoned off but other entrances to the site remain open.
Elsewhere, paths on the western lakeside have been closed either side of the Venetian Bridge to allow access improvements to the seating areas. These upgrades will make it safer and easier for wheelchair users and people with prams and pushchairs.
