Children’s diabetes team among England’s best

Children’s diabetes services in Southport, Formby and West Lancashire are among the best in the country, say experts.

The service, which is provided by Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, achieved nearly maximum marks in the national peer review assessment of trusts and services diagnosing and providing diabetes treatment to children and young people.

The 2014 National Paediatric Diabetes Peer Review Assessment team praised the “well-led, cohesive team who have good working relationships with each other and are striving to deliver a patient-focussed service”.

Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist Dr May Ng’s team of nurses, dietitians and support staff provides the children’s diabetes service from Ormskirk and District General Hospital.

“This is a wonderful honour and a fantastic tribute to the team who have worked hard to make sure this is the service they would want for their families,” said Dr Ng.

Dr Bapi Biswas, a local GP and board member of NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – the health body that commissions the service – said: “This is fantastic news and something to be extremely proud of. We are always working towards ensuring local residents have access to services that are of the highest quality.”

The team treats children up to the age of 18 and has 120 patients with around 10 new cases diagnosed each year.

The assessment team was particularly impressed that insulin pump therapy was offered to more patients in line with national guidelines and was actively promoted, even when children were inpatients. The service has more than 60 patients on insulin pumps and has a Facebook page.

They also noted a well-established local support group, the Lancelots, which has championed change in standards of diabetes care delivered at the hospital.
