Southport FC ran out winners in their last pre-season match against League 2 side Rochdale on Saturday.

Shaun Whalley, Russell Benjamin and new signing Michael Bakare were on target as the Sandgrounders clinched a comfortable win. The match was Southport’s last game before season starts against Grimsby Town next Saturday.

Whalley opened the scoring with an early goal from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the area by defender Sam Miniham. Whalley stepped up and fired the ball home from the spot.

The Sandgrounders dominated in the first half and Benjamin made it 2-0 with a great volley from inside the area after the Rochdake defender failed to clear.

Southport continued to press after half-time and new man Bakare got on to the scoresheet when he fired the ball home from close range.

Rochdale pulled a goal back in the closing stages when a Luke Watson corner was headed home by Neil Byrne.
