A Southport Councillor leads grot spot crusade

20th December 2017

A councillor is pressing ahead with his drive to clean up Southport in a bid to attract more shoppers and investors.

Cllr David Barton, who represents Dukes Ward, said work was vital to enhance the environment and make areas as safe as possible.

He called on property owners to work to improve the area’s grot sports and stressed that Sefton Council had to play its part by offering help and advice.

Cllr Barton is currently working with BT and Southport College to complete a project to tidy up a residential side street.

He first raised the matter of dangerous corroded railings and unkempt surroundings at the site of the former BT Exchange Building on Vulcan Street back in 2015.

He said: “Whilst I am grateful that a cross-section of the corroded railings closest to Mornington Road have since been replaced and repainted I am now requesting the final cross-sections leading up to Hawesside Street are completed as soon as possible as they pose a health and safety issue to local residents and passing pedestrians especially those with young children.

“I would like to thank local Southport College for their part in helping to smarten this area, which links the town centre directly with the suburban residential area.

“Besides the general maintenance of the grounds, which has included the recent removal of vegetation growth, it is essential that this area is kept pristine to reduce the incidence of antisocial behaviour and criminality in this part of the town, which has been raised with me by various constituents.”

Cllr Barton said it was essential that all property owners did what they could and, if necessary, sought support and guidance from either the Local Authority or other recognised bodies.

He said: “Whether these grot spots are at a property located prominently in the Victorian town centre, the leafy suburbs of Birkdale or the open Promenade it is crucial that we all play our role in not only preserving our local environment, but ensuring it is a safe one for people for all ages to live and work in.

“It should be borne in mind that sites such as this one offer potential exciting development opportunities for the retail sector if they are well maintained.

“I would kindly request that if anyone across Southport has any similar concerns to get in touch in the event that the environment where they reside may be further enhanced, but most importantly made as safe as possible for everyone.”
