Jess Middlebrook, a Southport College photography student, has been awarded first place in the Association of College’s photography competition. Jess’ entry beat over 600 other photographs to take the crown and was joined by fellow Photography HND graduate Alex Lewis’ entry which received a highly commended award. Jess’ winning photograph features Wayfarers Arcade’s Master Barber proprietor Robert Rix while Alex chose the Ramada Plaza for his entry.
Yvette Wheddon, Curriculum Leader for Photography at Southport College said “I am utterly thrilled for both Jess and Alex. Both students demonstrated an immense amount of talent while they were with us and for their skills to be recognised in such a prestigious national competition is amazing. It is also particularly nice that the winning photographs are both directly related to Southport.”
It’s not the first time Southport College students have won a photography competition. The department has a track record of successful competition entries and creative partnerships with local and national organisations.
Yvette added “Successful photographers build their reputation and work opportunities on the back of their portfolio. Our courses are designed to give students as many chances as possible to develop a diverse portfolio based around live projects and creative freedom. Just last year our students had the opportunity to display their work in the Atkinson gallery and more exciting projects are in place.”
