ENGLAND Golf’s leading amateurs, including Southport’s Sean Towndrow and Formby’s Paul Kinnear, will have high hopes of hitting the ground running in their quest for major honours after taking part in the first training camps of the winter at Quinta do Lago in Portugal.

Members of the England squads, all ranked in Europe’s top ten, found  the visits provided the opportunity to finetune their swings and enjoy the award-winning venue’s array of five-star facilities as part of Quinta do Lago’s role as the winter training base.

In addition to working on technique, activities for the players during the week-long camps included sessions on fitness, the short game, ball-flight control, game management and the mental side of the game.

Paul Ashwell, coach of the England Men’s A Squad, said: “The players really enjoyed the excellent practice facilities and were especially impressed with the North Course following its recent remodelling. We are all looking forward to returning for our next visit in March.”

Featuring three 18-hole championship courses, outstanding practice facilities at its Paul McGinley Academy, a TaylorMade Performance Centre and extensive leisure activities and facilities, Quinta do Lago has everything needed to guarantee a first-class golf experience.

The resort has invested €50m upgrading its sports, leisure and lifestyle facilities as part of a six-year investment program, including the €9.6m redesign of its North Course by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close association with European Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley, and was named ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’ at the 2015 World Golf Awards.

Quinta do Lago has been the official winter venue for hosting England Golf’s squad since 2014.

England’s women’s, boys’ and girls’ squads will also enjoy the facilities on camps in the run-up to the start of the 2016 season.
