Southport FC captain Simon Grand scored with a late header as the Sandgrounders rescued a point against Grimsby Town on the first day of the season.

Grand scored with three minutes to go as Liam Watson’s side came from behind to finish all square.

Grimsby dominated the game but they could only find the goal once. The Sandgrounders made them pay as they finished the game strongly and Grand equalised late on.

The first chance of the match feel to Southport as Tony Gray fired the ball wide after Nathan Pond failed to clear his lines.

Grimsby came back well and Shaun Pearson headed the ball over before Frankie Artus went close with a free-kick from outside the box.

Southport had a great chance after half time but Michael Bakarer’s shot was blocked by Pearson after a great run from the Sandgrounders striker.

Warson’s side had Tony McMillan to thank for producing some great saves. McMillan made a low save to keep out Andy Cook’s shot and he denied the Grimsby man again with a close range save.

He was also out of his goal quickly to clear the ball from Greg Pearson.

Grimsby took the lead on 74 minutes when Aswad Thomas crossed the ball in to the box and Craig Disley fired the ball home.

The Sandgrounders responded well and Grand equalised when he headed home Shaun Whalley’s cross with just three minutes remaining.
