Skelmersdale man sentenced following horrific attack

A Skelmersdale man has been sentenced to a total of 10 years and 10 months for an attack on a man, child abduction and possession of drugs.

Stephen Birch, aged 22 from 34 Evington, Skelmersdale pleaded guilty to Section 18, wounding with intent; taking a child, so as to remove him/her from a person having lawful control; and possession of a class A controlled drug.

The wounding took place on 30 June 2013 and involved Birch subjecting a man to an attack outside his home in Falkland.  He sustained serious injuries from his cheek down to his throat. Birch then ran from the scene.

Stephen Birch went on the run between 5 – 7 July 2013 with a 15 year old girl, however he was tracked down in Southport and arrested on 7 July 2013. On his arrest, he was found to be in possession of heroin.

For the Section 18, he received 10 years and six months, four months consecutive for child abduction and four months concurrent for possession of drugs.

DI Marc Nasser says: “Birch is a violent individual and the severity of his sentence reflects this. Thankfully the victim was able to call an ambulance and survived, as this was a particularly nasty attack.”
