Sefton could become one of the most expensive places in England to be buried or cremated if plans are approved.
A planned 25% increase will see the price of a cremation rise from £600 to £750, with a grave burial going up from £750 to £900.
The increased charges would generate an additional income in the region of £400,000.
Councillors will discuss the proposals at a cabinet meeting later.
According to a report, the increase would see prices “likely to be the most expensive charged locally, regionally and nationally”.
Sefton Council is looking to save about £43m over two years, due to government cuts in funding.
If approved, the changes are proposed to come into effect in April 2013 and will involve four cemeteries and two crematoria in the area.
