Safety fears for ‘rotten’ BHS building after signs of collapse

Safety fears have been raised over the condition of the ex British Home Stores building after part of the £500k building began to fall away in recent days.

Heavy facia coverings which have been worn down by years of bad weather and leaky pipe work has now come away from the building and is in danger of falling off on Corporation Street.

Staff who work at the Department of Health testing centre have parked their cars under the precarious hazard despite looking like it could fall at any minute.

Former staff member Nicola Holt said “it’s so sad walking past this every weekend and seeing it look worse and worse every time.

“Part of the building is so rotten it is falling away and it’s only a matter of time before it falls and hits someone walking to Chapel Street.”

The building was finally sold in auction last month for £500,000 to an unknown local businessman after lying partially empty for a number of years.
