Sefton is preparing to welcome thousands of golf fans as the Ricoh Women’s British Open heads to the borough.
As part of an exciting and busy events calendar taking place in Sefton, the tournament at Royal Birkdale is one of the golfing highlights of the sporting calendar.
In its 38th year, this year’s Championship makes its sixth appearance at Royal Birkdale – one of the most famous and historic links courses in the UK.
The famous Birkdale club has been host to nine Open Championships and is a fitting stage for the world’s leading players to perform, over what will be four memorable days from 10 – 13 July 2014.
Cllr Peter Dowd, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “The Ricoh Women’s British Open forms part of a very exciting summer of events taking place right across Sefton.
“Not only is the golf championship in the borough but we are hosting the World Record Poppy formation on Southport beach in July as well as welcoming the British Jet Ski Championships at Crosby Lakeside.
“As well as the traditional events including Southport Flower Show, the spectacular Southport Air Show and the British Musical Fireworks Championship in the Autumn, there really is plenty going on.
“Thousands of golf fans will be visiting Sefton for the women’s championship and I’m sure they will receive a warm and friendly welcome.”
The field for Royal Birkdale will include the reigning champion Stacy Lewis, past champions, Jiyai Shin and Yani Tseng along with Americans Lexi Thompson and Paula Creamer and Solheim Cup winners Beatriz Recari and Suzann Petterson. UK Favourites Catriona Matthew, Charley Hull and Laura Davies and newly crowned US Open Champion, Michelle Wie will also be at the Birkdale course.
Tickets for adults are £22 with under 16s FREE. On Saturday, July 12, children under 12 will receive a complimentary meal voucher. Tickets can be purchased via www.ricohwomensbritishopen.com with advanced purchased tickets available until Sunday July 6
