May Day May Day…The Fernley new years day event does not have a Minister to lead the commemoration service at the Olblisk!!! This was the distress call sent out by event organiser Jonathan Cunningham one week ago. However his lifeboat prayers were answered when Rev Martin Abrams (Methodist Minister at Southport hospital) got in touch to offer his religious services…and saved the event!

‘I couldn’t believe that we couldn’t find a Minister to lead the service on new years day during the Fernley in Southport. The challenge is that all the Ministers are engaged at their normal services on a Sunday morning. I was so relI ever when Martin got in touch. It wouldn’t have been the same without the formal blessing of the lifeboat crew. We can’t thank Martin enough.’ Said Jonathan.

Martin said ‘as a Southport lad this is such an amazing event for such a great cause. I’m delighted to be part of this iconic Sandgrounder event and very much looking forward to leading the service at the 1866 oblisk on the Southport Promenade 1100 hrs on New Year’s Day’

The Fernley is Southport’s unique event for New Year’s Day that commemorates the loss of 27 lives in 1866. Be part of this event and book on at www.thefernley.co.uk
