A late own goal by Sean Newton was enough to earn Southport FC a draw on a rainy at home against Stockport County on Tuesday night.

Newton scored an own goal with five minutes remaining to give the Sandgrounders a share of the spoils after Danny Hattersley gave Stockport the lead.

Southport started the match well and they had several good chances in the early stages. First Chris Lever was played in to the box by Shaun Whalley but his shot was straight at keeper Lewis King,

Karl Ledsham also wasted a good chance when King saved his low effort and King then mad a save from Chris Lynch’s header.

The Sandgrounders continued to press forward and Stockport had defender Joe Connor to thank for a goal line block from Ala Moogan’s shot.

Stockport took the lead on 40 minutes when Newton’s free kick was headed hoe by Hattersley.

The visitors had the better of the second half but they couldn’t find another goal. Striker Craig Hobson had a chance but Southport keeper Tony McMillan saved the ball.

Southport also had a chance when Whalley forced keeper King in to action again with a fierce shot.

The Sandgrounders found an equaliser on 85 minutes when the ball came back off the post from substitute Liam Willis cross and went in off defender Newton from six yards out.
