Southport FC suffered an injury time defeat against Blue Square Premier League leaders Newport County.

The Sandgrounders led 1-0 in the first half but Ben Swallow scored the winning goal on 92 minutes as they went home empty handed.

Southport started the match well and they took the lead on 18 minutes when Shaun Whalley was tripped up in the area by Andy Sandell. Chris Lever stepped up to the penalty spot and he tucked the ball away.

The Sandgrounders continued to press and Shaun Whalley went through on goal but keeper Lenny Pidgeley saved. Chris Almond also went close for the visitors when he had a header saved.

Newport same back in to the game and they Sandell had a free-kick beaten out by keeper Tony McMillan before Lee Evans hit a shot wide.

It was an end to end game and Karl Ledsham had a chance for Southport before half-time when he headed the ball wide.

Newport came out strongly for the second-half and they put pressure on the Southport goal. Lee Minshell went close from Sandell’s cross and Michael Flynn also had a good chance but he couldn’t find the target.

Newport drew level when Aaron O’Connor stabbed the ball home from the edge of the area after McMillan had come out of his goal.

The home team then went searching for the winner and Southport had McMillan to thank when he made a fine save from O’Connor.

Newport grabbed the winner in injury time when substitute Ben Swallow was played in by Jake Thompson and Swallow fired the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the area.
